The post The Cleveland Orchestra Does Romeo and Juliet Saturday at Blossom appeared first on Cleveland Scene.

On Friday at 2:30 & 7:30, the Cooper International Violin Competition continues  vetting its 18 semi-finalists in 30-minute recitals, then after a cut, the six remaining violinists will play 45-minute recitals on Saturday at 3 pm and 8 pm. Moving into next week, three finalists will play complete concertos on Monday at 7:30 with the Columbus ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and conductor David Danzmayr, while violinists who didn’t survive the final cut will play an Honors Recital on Sunday, August 9 featuring outstanding performances selected from the first three days of the competition. All events are free and will be live streamed from Oberlin’s Warner Concert Hall.

Lawrence Loh will conduct The Cleveland Orchestra in the live to screen score of John Powell’s How to Train Your Dragon on Friday at 7 and Sunday at 3 in Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center. And Lucas Waldin will be on the podium at Blossom Music Center on Saturday at 7 as the Orchestra presents vocalists Capathia Jenkins & Ryan Shaw in hits by Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Whitney Houston & Elvis Presley.

On Friday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 4, The Cleveland Opera and Cleveland Ballet will stage the 14-year-old Mozart’s opera Mitridate, rè di Ponto (Mithridates, King of Pontus). Grzegorz Nowak, conducts, and tenor David Sadlier sings the title role at First Baptist Church of Greater Cleveland.

And on Saturday at 7:30 in the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus and Sunday at 4 in Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Ohio will present pianist Kamil Pacholec on its summer series, featuring works by Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy.

Piano Cleveland shifts into high summer gear on Friday at 7:30 in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Session 1 of the Semi-Final Round of the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. Sessions 2 and 3 follow on Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. Click here for details.

Before that Semi-Final Round gets underway, Piano Cleveland will present a community concert on Friday at Noon at the Natural History Museum.

With the opening of The Red Mill on Thursday, this weekend, Ohio Light Opera will have all of its summer titles running in repertory. On Friday, catch Yeomen of the Guard at 2, and The Merry Widow at 7:30. Saturday’s shows are Damn Yankees at 2 and My Fair Lady at 7:30. And The Red Mill closes a busy week with a 2 pm matinee on Sunday. 

On Saturday at 1pm, Akron Symphonic Winds will take their Happy Birthday, America! tour to the Akron Art Expo in Hardesty Park, and there may be places left for M.U.S.i.C. – Stars in the Classics’ 6:30 Summer Music in the Garden party in Orange Village.

And on Saturday at 7 at Blossom, principal cello Mark Kosower will be the featured soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, Kevin John Edusei, conducting, in Martinů’s Cello Concerto No. 1.

On Sunday, three al fresco concerts close out a packed weekend. At 4 pm, Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle will present Keiran Cantilina in a Summer Carillon Festival Concert. 

Close by in Rockefeller Park on Sunday at 6, The Cleveland Opera and Cleveland Ballet Theater will host Opera in the Italian Cultural Garden. 

And on Sunday at 7 at Blossom, The Cleveland Orchestra will present An Evening with vocalist Idina Menzel, star of Rent, Wicked, and Frozen, Andy Einhorn conducts.

This weekend, The College of Wooster’s resident professional company presents The Merry Widow (Friday at 2 p.m.), My Fair Lady (Friday at 7:30 p.m.), The Boys from Syracuse (Saturday at 2 p.m.), Damn Yankees (Saturday at 7:30 p.m.), and The Yeomen of the Guard (Sunday at 2 p.m.) in Freedlander Theatre.

The Cleveland Orchestra welcomes conductor Semyon Bychkov and violinist Karen Gomyo for an evening of Brahms and Shostakovich at Blossom on Friday at 7 p.m., and Kent Blossom Young Artists concerts are daily events in a variety of venues — see the concert listings below.

Piano Cleveland Live presents local professional pianists in a 5:30 p.m. outdoor concert on Friday at Van Aken District in Shaker Hts. 

The Oberlin Organ Academy hosts a student recital on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Finney Chapel.

And Akron Symphonic Winds wish a happy 250th Birthday to America on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in Nathan Hale Park in Parma Heights.

CHAMBERFEST CLEVELAND visits the Natural History Museum for its all-ages “Jurassic Jamboree” on Saturday at 11, and presents its “Summer Music program featuring a baker’s dozen of its artists on Saturday at 7:30 in Chagrin Falls’ Federated Church.

ENCORE – Gates Mills Music & Ideas Festival wraps up its summer offerings with “Next Gen: Our Home at ENCORE” on Sunday at 3 in the Community House of Gates Mills.

THE LUTE SOCIETY OF AMERICA quietly presents Cleveland Lutefest, a week’s worth of Renaissance and Baroque music every summer, played by internationally acclaimed performers at Case Western Reserve University. This year, Paul O’Dette will be featured in the opening performance in Harkness Chapel on Sunday at 7:30.

OHIO LIGHT OPERA will have the first two of its six summeshows up and running this weekend: Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady hits the boards in the College of Wooster’s Freedlander Theater on Friday at 2, followed by Damn Yankees on Sunday at 2.

This weekend, ChamberFest Cleveland revs up to full speed, ENCORE Chamber Music Institute continues its progress around town, and Ohio Light Opera gets underway in Wooster with My Fair Lady, the first of its six summer shows.

ENCORE Gates Mills Music & Ideas Festival investigates New Sounds, including Andrew Rindfleisch’s haunting American Descent, recently named runner up for a Pulitzer (7:30 at Baldwin Wallace), and ChamberFest Cleveland presents Finding Resonance with music by Jörg Widmann, George Enescu & Anton Arensky (7:30 in Harkness Chapel at Case).

JUNE 13 – SATURDAY

Ohio Light Opera opens its season with Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady.(2 pm in Freedlander Theatre Wooster). ENCORE presents its Masters Series: In Your Arms at Last (7:30 at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls), ChamberFest Cleveland presents Homecoming with music by Mozart, Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, and Ernest Bloch. (7:30 at Mixon Hall, CIM), and North Coast Men’s Chorus presents Pride program, We Belong (7:30 at Maltz Performing Arts Center, repeated on Sunday at 3).

This weekend’s schedule offers a rich mix of stand-alone events — some with multiple performances — and intriguingly programmed festival concerts.

JUNE 5 – FRIDAY

On Friday, Armin Kelly’s Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival (download the program book here) hosts the Kaleido Guitar Duo (Hao Yang and Kevin Loh, 7:30 in CIM’s Mixon Hall), and ENCORE presents an al fresco celebration with a dancer and full string ensemble (7:30 at the Grove Amphitheater in Mayfield).

JUNE 6 – SATURDAY

This afternoon, the Guitar Festival presents Muxin Li (3 pm in Mixon Hall), and this evening welcomes the Davin-Levin Duo (Colin Davin, guitar, and Emily Levin, harp, 7:30 in Mixon Hall).

Also this afternoon, Renovare Music combines original songs written by refugee storytellers with Afghani and South African instrumentals (2 pm at Visible Voice Books in Cleveland,) while Studio Espressivo features pianists Allison Hillier and Chris Neiner performing tunes inspired by commedia dell’arte (3 pm at Studio Espressivo, repeated Saturday at 8 pm and on Sunday at 8.)

Tonight, ENCORE has given its artistic director Jinjoo Cho carte blanche, and she’s picked music by Aino Sibelius, Jörg Widmann, Jean Sibelius, and Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht for her 7:30 program at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.

JUNE 7 – SUNDAY

We’ll highlight three concerts today at the Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival. Guitarist Nicolò Spera joins flutist Christina Jennings, and violist Matthew Dane, viola, in music by Theofanidis (2 pm in Mixon Hall) and Petra Polácková plays works by J.S. Bach, Collins, Dowland, Narvaez, and Torroba (4 pm in Mixon). The day of Classical guitar music ends with the final round of the James Stroud Classical Guitar Competition in which young musicians ages thirteen to eighteen will perform before the public and a panel of internationally acclaimed judges. Prizes will be announced. (6:30 in Mixon Hall).

MAY 31 – SUNDAY

Renovare Music presents Journeys of Home, featuring original songs written collaboratively with refugee & immigrant storytellers from Syria, South Africa, and Peru, and instrumentals by Afghani composer Babrak Wassa, Layale Chaker, and South African traditionals. CityMusic Cleveland presents its Brass Quintet. James Stephenson’s Fanfare for an Angel, Nicole Piunno’s Monterey Sketches, Margaret Brouwer’s Timespan, and James Johnston’s Yale Quick March and Two-Step. (7 pm at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, Free).

Tonight at 7:30, CityMusic Chamber Orchestra continues its final peripatetic series of the season at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus. Jeannette Sorrell conducts Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, and Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Piano features violinist Diana Cohen, violin, and pianist Roman Rabinovich. Repeated on Saturday at 7:30 in St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills and Sunday at 2:30 in Our Lady of Angels Church. 

Also at 7:30, Erik Ochsner leads the Youngstown Symphony in Modest Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina Prelude: Dawn on the Moskva River (arr. Rimsky-Korsakov), Anna Thorvaldsdóttir’s ARCHORA, Felix Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea & Prosperous Voyage, and Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, “The Inextinguishable,” in Stambaugh Auditorium.

MAY 16 – SATURDAY

As the central event in its Opera and Humanities Festival, The Cleveland Orchestra presents Beethoven’s Fidelio, Franz Welser-Möst, conducting, with Sara Jakubiak & Ashley Emerson, sopranos, David Butt Philip & Owen McCausland, tenors, Tomasz Konieczny & Dashon Burton, bass-baritones, Martin Summer, bass, and The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus (7:30 in Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center).

Also at 7:30 pm – The Singers’ Club of Cleveland presents “And All Nature Did Sing!” Chris Clark, artistic director, and Ben Malkevitch, piano, at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River (repeated on Sunday at 3 at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland.)

MAY 17 – SUNDAY

This afternoon at 3, Arts Renaissance Tremont honors the late Chris Haff Paluck, founder of the ART series, with a tribute concert by the Amici String Quartet, guitarist Jason Vieaux, and The Cleveland Orchestra Bass Quartet at Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC.

Also this afternoon at 3, Master Singers Chorale presents a 25th Anniversary Concert led by Marc Weagraff, with pianist Eric Charnofsky, soprano Sabina Balsamo, mezzo-soprano Kimberly Lauritsen, tenor; Ethan Burck, tenor, and baritone Aidan Eddy, baritone, including the world premiere of Charnofsky’s Everyone Sang, at First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls. Today at 11 am at Severance Music Center, Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in Sergei Prokofiev’s First Symphony, and excerpts from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. Repeated on Saturday at 7:30 with the addition of the U.S. premiere of Olga Neuwirth’s Zones of Blue with clarinetist Jörg Widmann.

This evening at 7:30, Gregory Ristow conducts the Cleveland Chamber Choir in La Fleur de la Renaissance: Chansons, motets, and mass movements from Renaissance France at Trinity Cathedral (repeated on Saturday at First Lutheran in Lorain, The Resonance Project presents Lullabies and Laments with CLE Concierto Baroque ensemble at Forest Hill Church, and Raphael Jiménez leads the Oberlin Orchestra with pianist William Chen in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Camille Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 in Finney Chapel.
