The announcement was made&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/announcement\/blm-announces-september-2026-sale-oil-and-gas-leases-ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earlier this month<\/a>&nbsp;and these parcels are in Monroe and Washington counties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeasing is the first step in the process to develop federal oil and gas resources. Before development operations can begin, an operator must submit an application for permit to drill detailing development plans,\u201d the&nbsp;Bureau of Land Management said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe BLM reviews applications for permits to drill, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fracking is the process of injecting liquid into the ground at a high pressure to extract oil or gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were approximately 2,000 incidents associated with oil and gas wells in Ohio from 2015-2023, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fractracker.org\/2024\/03\/data-gaps-a-critical-examination-of-oil-and-gas-well-incidents-in-ohio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FracTracker Alliance,<\/a>&nbsp;a nonprofit that collects data on fracking pipelines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence shows increased exposure to fracking impacts health, in particular children\u2019s health, including low birth weight, preterm births, congenital anomalies, and asthma, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/news-article\/deziel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yale School of Medicine<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ohio Capital Journal recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2026\/07\/14\/the-precipice-of-an-emergency-marietta-residents-worry-drinking-water-could-become-contaminated\/\">published a story&nbsp;<\/a>about how Washington County residents are concerned injection wells leaking brine waste could contaminate Marietta\u2019s drinking water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ohio Environmental Council Senior Attorney for Land and Water&nbsp;Nathan Johnson said putting out bids to frack Wayne National Forest is concerning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that the feds keep trying to push this,\u201d he said. \u201cWe really need to take good care of our public lands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BLM\u2019s overall plan is to lease out 40,000 acres for fracking in Wayne National Forest, Johnson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cThat\u2019s a huge amount of land for Ohio,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s more than 30,000 football fields.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As required by law, the BLM is currently in the middle of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eplanning.blm.gov\/Project-Home\/?id=798d6bf4-a7f2-f011-8407-001dd80bcf93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">30-day public protest<\/a> to receive additional comments which will end Aug. 17. The BLM scoped out the 41 parcels in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ohio state Rep. Tristan Rader, D-Lakewood, urged people to post comments.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is just continued exploitation of the people and resources of Ohio by large corporations,\u201d Rader said in a statement. \u201cFor generations, the people of this region and this state have been sidelined by the interest of extractive industries.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/r09\/wayne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wayne National Forest<\/a>&nbsp;was established in 1935 and comprises 244,000 acres spanning&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalforests.org\/forest\/wayne-national-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 counties<\/a>&nbsp;with three units in Athens, Ironton, and Marietta in Southeast Ohio.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 200,000 people annually visit Wayne National Forest, which&nbsp;is known for its hiking, biking, horseback riding trails, and off-road vehicle trails.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf development occurs on this scale \u2026 you\u2019re going to have heavy truck traffic,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re going to see well paths. One of the the major concerns if you\u2019re visiting the area is health, safety, truck traffic, but the air pollution is just always a constant. It does not respect boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are already 1,200 conventional wells operating in Wayne National Forest, Ohio Oil and Gas Association spokesperson Mike Chadsey noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Johnson said there are very big differences between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis project, it\u2019s all shale development with these huge, massive well pads, massive pipeline developments,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cSo totally different ball game than what the Wayne has seen in the past with these much smaller operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A national forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the Department of Agriculture and blends conservation with public service and resource extraction like logging and mining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A national park is managed by the National Park Service under the U.S. Department of Interior and the goal is to protect and preserve natural lands in their natural state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ohio has one national park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Northeast Ohio.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Originally published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2026\/07\/30\/federal-government-will-put-2840-acres-of-ohios-only-national-forest-out-to-bid-for-fracking\/\">Ohio Capital Journal.<\/a> Republished here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 3,000 acres of land in Ohio\u2019s only national forest will be auctioned for fracking in September.&nbsp; The&nbsp;Bureau of Land Management announced 41 parcels totaling 2,840 acres in Wayne National Forest will go up for a bid on Sept. 15.
