{"id":333673,"date":"2026-08-06T12:56:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T12:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clevescene.com\/?p=333673"},"modified":"2026-08-06T12:56:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T12:56:45","slug":"ohio-sees-second-week-of-significant-increases-in-cyclosporiasis-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clevescene.com\/news\/ohio-news\/ohio-sees-second-week-of-significant-increases-in-cyclosporiasis-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"Ohio Sees Second Week of \u2018Significant\u2019 Increases in Cyclosporiasis Cases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ohio has seen its second straight week of \u201csignificant increases\u201d in cases of cyclosporiasis, the parasite that has been connected to leafy greens, and to severe diarrhea throughout the U.S, according to the state\u2019s health director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ohio Department of Health shows the state has seen nearly 4,000 cases since June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highest numbers come out of Lucas County, which has 553 cases to date since the beginning of the summer. Cuyahoga County has a reported 457 cases, and Wood County comes in third with 446 cases since June 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Ohio hasn\u2019t caught up to the numbers seen in Michigan, considered one of the biggest states in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2026\/07\/17\/ohio-has-more-than-1000-reported-cyclosporiasis-cases-according-to-the-state-health-department\/\">the cyclosporiasis outbreak<\/a>, the numbers are getting close, according to the state\u2019s health director, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have just seen over the course of the last couple of months a fairly steady and alarming increase in the number of cases,\u201d Vanderhoff said in a Tuesday press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat it is telling us is that we have reason for continued concern about the risk people face from cyclosporiasis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vanderhoff encouraged anyone who has been sick to respond to calls from health departments seeking to interview those who have been infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese interviews provide crucial data \u2026 and help find commonalities among those who have been sick,\u201d Vanderhoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the state is deferring to the FDA and the CDC to identify potential sources of the outbreak, the state has been collecting information they\u2019ve passed on to federal agencies, according to Vanderhoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/outbreaks\/07-26\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The CDC has traced infections<\/a>&nbsp;back to iceberg lettuce in nine states including Ohio, and produce company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/taylor-fresh-foods-recalls-iceberg-lettuce-central-mexico-because-possible-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Taylor Farms has recalled iceberg lettuce&nbsp;<\/a>sourced from central Mexico, according to the federal agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation into the outbreak is still ongoing, as the CDC is also investigating other cases it says are unrelated to the outbreak hitting Ohio and surrounding states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ohio health director dismissed ideas that fresh produce should be avoided entirely, pushing for more diligent cleaning practices instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrevention really begins not with avoiding \u2026 things our bodies need, but taking a sound approach to how we prepare fruits and vegetables every single day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proper washing of produce includes a thorough rinse under running water, and scrubbing fruits and vegetables with tougher skins with a brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Robert Frenck, a pediatrician and director of the Vaccine Research Center at Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital, was mainly on the press conference to discuss child vaccines as a new school year approaches, but also served to dissuade ideas that cyclosporiasis is bigger than it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the greater scheme of things, it\u2019s still a rather unusual infection,\u201d Frenck said, adding that norovirus sees far more incidence rates annually than the parasitic infection that\u2019s covering major news headlines this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallmark of cyclosporiasis is the lasting effects, Frenck said, with symptoms like diarrhea lasting weeks, sometimes months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment is possible through antibiotics, but Frenck said it\u2019s important to know when to alert the doctor (after about a week of symptoms), and for physicians to make sure lab tests look for the parasite. Routine lab work wouldn\u2019t normally cover that type of infection, according to the pediatrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Frenck and Vanderhoff said deaths are not typical from the infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2026\/08\/03\/michigan-reports-two-fatalities-amid-cyclosporiasis-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reported deaths in Michigan<\/a>&nbsp;were connected to individuals with unrelated significant health problems, but Vanderhoff said that does give reason for immunocompromised, elderly, or very young individuals to keep medical professionals involved in their care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe caution that I would remind people about is if you\u2019re vulnerable because your immune system is not working optimally \u2026 and you develop diarrhea, you should be reaching out to your provider immediately for guidance and direction,\u201d Vanderhoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Originally published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiocapitaljournal.com\/2026\/08\/06\/ohio-sees-second-week-of-significant-increases-in-cyclosporiasis-cases\/\">Ohio Capital Journal.<\/a> Republished here with permission.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio has seen its second straight week of \u201csignificant increases\u201d in cases of cyclosporiasis, the parasite that has been connected to leafy greens, and to severe diarrhea throughout the U.S, according to the state\u2019s health director.
